I hate how people here think that “proper general English” is the only way to speak English and all the others are considered “idiocy” like if language has anything to do with intelligence. I’m not even from the U.S. and I know this better than most of you.

EDIT: Further investigation shows that the original post had only the US dialects and then the others were added in an edit. I am partially mollified. I mean, I’m still annoyed that the wrongly-labelled shorter list is being reblogged all over the place, but I now see that no one cut out the rest of North America on purpose.

i’m so tired of seeing pictures and gifs about how using the term friend zone is sexist. that guy with dreads who says that you don’t deserve a cookie for being nice. what does that even mean? most couples who date don’t date each other because they did something extraordinary ok. HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU. but something everyone seems to be missing is that a lot of people who date, date people they find to be funny, relatable, attractive, smart, things like this. so yeah, you shouldn’t be rewarded for being nice, you should be rewarded for being yourself. you don’t have to add all this extra effort, you shouldn’t have to do anything. so if you’re not an alpha male, you don’t have many options. that’s the complaint of the boy in the friend zone. my words of advice? if you find yourself getting led on by a girl who is only going to talk to you for comfort in-between dating guys who aren’t you. stop talking to her, that’s not even being a friend. that’s my real problem with the friend zone, they say you’re just friends, but that’s not even true either, you’re basically getting used to comfort her and getting nothing in return besides hopping that maybe you can be happy with her someday, which may never happen. now i’m not saying all girls only lead you on or what ever. some girls ask for you comfort and, hey! actually do care about you! some girls just want to be one of the guys and never asked you to be all over their shit. you know what? it’s complicated! and there’s nothing wrong with being a confused kid. this whole friend zone being a sexist term thing is such a non problem. it’s like people on tumblr got bored and just started looking for things to call sexist. something i’ve been hearing is that girls aren’t here for you. ok… but i understand that girls DO in fact like guys, and pursue them. so is it wrong to think maybe they could like me? is it wrong to have a misunderstanding over the fact that a girl laughs with you and hugs you and seems to want to always be around you? i can understand they just think you’re an awesome person but would rather date someone else. it’s frustrating as fuck and fucking annoying, but i can understand it, but let a damn mother fucker get confused. god damn. calm down. Look dude, here’s facts: I understand that it is sad to like someone who doesn’t like you backthat way.It is ok to be sad. It is NOT ok to assume that girls who are nice to you but don’t want to date you are leading you on and are horrible horrible bitches. That IS sexist, and you are a fucknut for thinking so.

Is THIS the single most pressing issue of sexism in our culture? No. But it is a microaggression, and microaggressions need to be address sometimes.

Last month I put out a call for feedback, and you all responded!

I’m in awe of the generous, thoughtful, and supportive community that has sprung up around 750 Words. It’s crazy and fascinating to me how that has happened around a site devoted to solitary writing. That’s weird, right? :)

Now that Kellianne, Niko, and I are settled in Berkeley, and have mostly moved into our new place, where we hope to stay put for a good while, I think we have come up with something of a plan, at least for the near term.

Signal-boosting because Buster is staggeringly bad at official communication—anybody who uses 750 Words, IT’S GOING PAID-ONLY IN MARCH.

You know that the ORIGINAL poster is a white woman, yes? That white people are already vastly overrepresented within both mainstream media AND the feminist movement as a whole? A long time ago, I read an article about how, you know, women have gotten used to identifying with male characters in fiction because male protagonists have been so prevalent. The article highlighted that while men often claim female characters are hard to identify with — because they aren’t MEN — women don’t generally make the same claim in reverse.

And so, the article went on, people of color have had to develop the same skill when it comes to white characters. Because mainstream literature (and by that I mean books and movies and tv and entertainment in general) most often prominently features white people. And white people say, oh, those characters who are people of color, they’re so hard to identify with. But you don’t hear the same in reverse.

My memory of this article puts me in my bedroom in Atlanta, which means I’d have been 11 or 12, most likely. So it was the late 80s.

In the intervening time, I’ve given up reading a lot of the male-dominated sci-fi and fantasy stories I used to devour. I got tired of reading the same old stories about white dudes. It’s not that I can’t find things with which to identify, it’s that I’ve run out of patience for having to.

I hear this sentiment echoed and intensified when people of color speak on the internet (or, you know, in person). Can they see themselves in representations that don’t look like them? Sure. Are they tired of HAVING TO DO SO? Rightfully and righteously: YES.

The above poster does not exist in a vacuum. It’s clearly a response — perhaps it could be considered part of an attempted dialogue. White women don’t need to be pictured in this (AWESOME FUCKING) poster, because our inclusion has never been an issue — white women have ignored feminists of color and blocked their ears to hearing them for years and years.

I want more representations of everyone — not just in my old faves sci-fi and fantasy but in FEMINISM, hell yes. But I don’t need my reflection to be present in every image ever because there are some things where whiteness is included by culturally constructed default. And if you cannot make room, white people, for representations that do not show you your own face, if you think that these sorts of images are too hard to relate to because they don’t look just like you, then you are missing the point entirely.

Make some damn room. Move over.

It wasn’t the spot that needed it most, but I had a laundry basket full of clean towels and things that I’d been delaying putting away for a week because of the linen closet’s fucked-ness.

The apparent pile of fabric at the bottom of the picture is actually the top of the laundry basket.

After:

There’s a few things hiding behind the curtain, but I can assure you that they’re all folded and stacked. That laundry basket is now officially the dirty linen laundry basket. There’s another load of towels and things drying, but they’ll be much easier to put away now.

I should probably get that paint out of there. The previous owner of my place left me the leftover paint from when she decorated so I could touch things up if need be. But although there are spots that could use touching up, I have no idea how old the paint is, and most of the paint cans seem to be nearly empty anyways. Even if there is some worth keeping, it could go to my storage space in the basement of the building.

Be honest, your sheets need washing, don’t they? If not, or if you don’t have access to a washing machine right now, MAKE YOUR BED.

After you start the washer or make your bed, round out your 20 minutes washing some dishes, unloading or reloading the dishwasher, or scrubbing your sink and drying rack.

10 minute break when you’re done.

This morning I was all “Ha! My sheets actually don’t need washing, for once! I can go straight to doing dishes!”

But then I remembered that my guest sheets needed washing. You win this round, UfYH.
